Healesville Sanctuary, an hour into the Yarra Valley

Australian native wildlife in bushland — far enough to feel like a proper trip, close enough to be an easy day.

Skylight Buslines coaches waiting under Australian gum trees before a group departure

Healesville Sanctuary sits about an hour north-east of Melbourne in the Yarra Valley, and its focus on Australian native species makes it the natural fit for units on native animals, habitats and conservation. The extra distance over Parkville buys a genuinely different setting: bushland rather than inner city.

An hour each way, planned for

An hour out and an hour back is comfortable for year 2 upward and manageable below that with a slightly later start. We plan departures so the group arrives after opening rather than queuing at the gate with restless students.

There is coach parking on site, so the vehicle and driver stay for the day. Lunches and bags can live on the coach, which matters at a site where the walking is spread out through bushland.

The Spirits of the Sky show

The birds of prey presentation runs at set times and is the highlight most groups plan around. Tell us the session you are aiming for and we will work the departure back from it — arriving twenty minutes late to a timed show is the one avoidable disappointment on this excursion.

Common questions

It is comfortable from about year 2. Below that it is still very doable with a slightly later departure and a planned stop — we will talk it through honestly rather than just quoting the run.

Tell us where you need to be.

Share your trip and we'll put together a clear, fair quote — usually within the day.
